You don’t need to purchase a VPN if:

  • You use HTTPS websites while surfing the web because they encrypt your traffic
  • You’re using your home WiFi or cellular data

However, you should use a VPN while:

  • you’re using public WiFi, such as the WiFi of supermarkets, coffee shops, etc. Because public WiFi is more prone to be hacked.
  • You’re using an app since you have no idea of the app traffic being encrypted or not

WORD OF CAUTION: This study shows, researchers have found that 5.5% of the 10,000 most popular websites (with HTTPS), have security issues.

So, if you’re on a business trip and you need public WiFi, it’s better to use a VPN for ensuring safety.
